How to Create a Lifestyle That Feels Unbound

A lifestyle that feels Unbound doesn’t mean ditching responsibility and running off to Bali (unless that’s your vibe). It means choosing yourself—on purpose, over and over again.

Sick of feeling like your life was written by someone else’s checklist? Same.

This is your permission slip to burn the rulebook, question the “shoulds,” and create a life that feels like it was made for you, by you.

We’re talking:

  • Freedom (the real kind).
  • Adventures you don’t need PTO to enjoy.
  • Less burnout, more barefoot mornings and spontaneous Target runs.
  • Income streams that don’t suck the life out of you.

If you’re ready for a lifestyle reset with no Stepford vibes and no fake-it-til-you-break energy, let’s go.

Heads up: This post contains a few affiliate links. We only recommend things we’d use ourselves (or already do). If you buy through one of them, we might earn a small commission—at no extra cost to you.

1. Figure Out What “Unbound” Actually Means to You

Your version of freedom might be a passport and a carry-on. Or it might be slow mornings, digital detoxes, and saying no to things that make you feel small.

Ask yourself:

  • What actually makes me feel free?
  • Where do I feel most alive?
  • What do I want my days to feel like—not just look like?

Try this: Make a “freedom list.” Add everything that makes your soul unclench. Travel, naps, remote work, solo brunches, creative projects—nothing’s too small or weird. If you haven’t already done so, sign up for our free bucket list download.

2. Break Up With the “Shoulds”

Let’s be real. Most of us have a whole damn syllabus of what we should be doing.

Get a steady job. Buy a house. Be productive 24/7. Smile more.

But the Unbound life? It questions all of that.

  • Who told you you have to climb a ladder you don’t even like?
  • What if you could rewrite every outdated rule running your life?

Do this: Make a list of your personal “shoulds.” Then rewrite them into “I choose to…” statements that actually light you up.

3. Rethink the Way You Make Money

Nothing kills freedom faster than being chained to a soul-sucking job.

If you want more autonomy, your income has to stop being the boss of you.

Ideas to explore:

  • Remote work (so you can work in leggings from anywhere).
  • Passive income (like digital products or affiliate marketing—you know, like this blog).
  • Freelancing or side hustles (writing, photography, coaching—whatever you’re good at).
  • Slow travel or working abroad (yes, you can work from a beach…or a cozy café in Prague).

Start here: Write down 3 ways you could make money without being tied to a desk or location.

4. Declutter the Chaos—Physically & Mentally

Unbound doesn’t mean messy (unless we’re talking about your Pinterest boards).

It means creating space for the stuff that matters.

  • Physically: Clean out your closet. Organize your desktop. (Use these organizers—they changed my life.)
  • Mentally: Say no to draining plans. Stop overcommitting. Give yourself breathing room.
  • Emotionally: Let go of guilt for doing life differently. Seriously.

Your move: Pick one thing to declutter today. Your junk drawer, your inbox, your calendar—whatever’s screaming the loudest.

These drawer dividers made my bathroom feel like a five-star spa. No joke.

5. Train Your Brain to Think Unbound

Even if your schedule’s open, your mind might still be living in fear-and-doubt-ville.

An Unbound mindset is about trust. Trusting yourself. Trusting the process. Trusting that you don’t need all the answers to begin.

  • Adopt a growth mindset. Flops are feedback, not failure.
  • Ask “What if it works?” instead of “What if I fail?”
  • Surround yourself with expanders—people who make you believe it’s possible.

👉 Try this: Listen to a podcast or read a book that stretches your thinking. I recommend Think Bigger if you’re ready to ditch small dreams.

6. Choose Experiences Over Stuff (Except Candles. Always Candles.)

Let’s get one thing straight: You don’t need more things—you need more moments.

  • Travel somewhere new (even if it’s just the next town).
  • Say yes to an improv class or a solo weekend.
  • Spend time with people who make you laugh so hard you snort.

Do this: Plan one experience this month. Doesn’t have to be big—just something you’ve been putting off.

7. Take the Damn Step—Even If It’s Messy

TWaiting for the perfect time is just another way of staying stuck.

The perfect time is a lie. The starting line is right now.

  • Start small.
  • Experiment without needing it to be “the one.”
  • Adjust as you go—this isn’t a fixed plan, it’s a living, breathing lifestyle.

Today’s challenge: Pick one action from this post and actually do it.

Your Unbound Life Starts… Whenever You Decide It Does

This isn’t about becoming some minimalist digital nomad (unless that’s your dream). It’s about building a life that feels more you and less performative.

Whether you start by clearing a drawer or reimagining your career, the point is this:

You don’t need permission. You need momentum.

So—what’s one tiny step you’re taking today?
